chalk lettering

i'm so inspired by those who do things a little differently.

dana tanamachi is an adc young gun, a graphic designer and chalk letterer. indeed, you heard me correctly: a chalk letterer.

we're not talking café menus: this lil vid shows her process of creating the ultimate in typographic lock-ups (which of course involves much wiping, redoing, wiping, and redoing).

hand-generated type maintains it's hold, and this brings a whole lovely 'other' feeling to the trend.

appropriately, she works for louise fili, where no doubt her skills fit right in.

and lear it is…

many, many months later... am finally following up on my last post!

we installed the artwork inspired by edward lear's runcible spoon in june.

work in progress

i spent some time at the rizzeria on saturday... more work in progress for the show!

swissair

love this low-down on the branding history of swissair...

particularly the retro style and typography of the older ads - such craft.

hand-painted…

wow - type-lovers should visit typarchive... an online gallery and resource of hand-generated type, vernacular signage...

this style of type is definitely having its moment in the sun (again) at the moment... and there is a load of inspiration here.

hero: marian bantjes

trust ted to be the source: a reflective talk by this uber-designer. marian specifically calls herself a graphic artist, and made a transition some time ago to focus on a more personal approach in her work, guided by her 'heart, interests and ego'. she attributes this to her success. its like she adopted a fine art approach...

i am constantly fascinated in the art/design divide - this brings a fresh and grounded perspective. she explains the reason that she creates graphic art enables her to get her work out there, as opposed to fine art which can be more insular.

so ultimately it seems to be a fine art approach, with design purpose, perhaps.

heavy type: wellington writers walk

inspiration for a current project/tender i'm doing: typographic concrete 'installations' by catherine griffiths. just beautiful...

along the city’s urban waterfront each sculpture is positioned unexpectedly: suspended in water, lying on grass, even on the rocks, as if detritus washed up by the sea.

so…

you need a typeface?

clever, intricate, sweet infographic to help a befuddled designer select a typeface...

we all love a comic sans in-joke, no?

while i was there: gotan project

hawt!

well gosh this must be the raunchiest type i've ever seen. gotan's new album is out in april... looking/sounding good!

(ps. representational type again)

100-year-old typeface

the idea of collage-illustrative type sounds awful! frost, however, have done a marvellous - and appropriate - job for the state library of nsw, celebrating 100 years of the mitchell library.

sweet little construction videos can be viewed here.

representational type: i see a trend coming...
